Environmental Know-How in the Mid Nordic Region

The Mid Nordic region - The Nordic Green Belt - is especially known of rich natural and cultural heritage and high environmental quality. But the regions are also pioneers in sustainable development in Europe.

Etelä-Savo is known as an eco-province since 1980. Jämtland is the first county council in Europe certified by ISO 14001 Environmental Management System and EMAS. Västernorrland will profile as an Environment province (Miljölän). Etelä-Pohjanmaa and Pohjanmaa have together with the West Finland Regional Environment Centre set a goal that Western Finland will be developed into European pioneer region regarding environmental protection. According to the new technological strategy Keski-Suomi will be in year 2010 the number one in the world in the use of bio energy. Sør- and Nord- Trøndelag already produce all the electricity by renewable energy resources - hydroelectric and wind power.

Nowadays the regions of Nordic Green Belt have a profound amount of environmental and energy enterprises and organizations (universities, high schools, research institutes etc.) working for more sustainable way of living.
